If you know, you know. Trick Daddy’s Sunday’s Eatery has long been the go-to spot in Miami Gardens for fried ribs, catfish, and conch that tastes like Sunday dinner at your grandma’s house. Now, Broward folks don’t have to make the trip down south because Trick just opened a second location in Fort Lauderdale’s historic Sistrunk neighborhood, Miami Herald News reports.
Replacing Donna’s Caribbean Restaurant, which opened just two years ago, the new spot already feels like home. Sunday’s Eatery sits right on the corridor of the city’s oldest African American community, filling the soul food gap left behind by the recent closing of Betty’s Soul Food. And when we say the city showed out? A line of at least 200 people wrapped around the building for the grand opening. Trick himself pulled up in a red Tesla Cybertruck, shaking hands, hugging folks, and holding babies—because of course Trick loves the kids.
The beloved Florida rapper, real name Maurice Young, made it clear this restaurant is about more than just good food.
“That was the bottom of the barrel of Carol City back then,” he said, reflecting on opening the first eatery. “We could have went to Wynwood. We could have went to South Beach. We could have went anywhere we wanted. … We wanted to go to Miami Gardens to show them that we are still for our people.”
He’s bringing that same energy to Fort Lauderdale. He promises the same menu, affordable prices, and the same focus on giving Black residents opportunities. Business partner Latosia Colvin added, “We like to be where we’re welcomed. We like to ingratiate in areas where we can uplift and hire from the community and just bring something of value to the community.”
The timing couldn’t be better. Sistrunk has been on the rise with new housing developments, Black-owned shops, Smitty’s Wings still holding strong, and the highly anticipated Victory Entertainment Complex on the way.
District 8 commissioner Robert McKinzie said it best: “This was our thriving economic engine back in the day when we were kids, and now you have another mainstream entertainer that wants to invest here. We want all restaurants. We want all types of entertainment. We want everything that they want over here in our neighborhood as well so we can have choices.”
Managing partner Sharrod Robinson, a Miami native, admitted the moment was emotional. “I have always known that we will be good here,” he said, holding back tears. “Being born and raised in Miami, I love the way Broward County has a certain type of countryness, if you could say, from [us].”
And for Trick, this is only the beginning. He’s already got his eyes on expanding to other cities like Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, and Jacksonville. “Y’all get ready,” he warned. “We coming.”
Looks like Sunday’s Eatery is officially for the culture and for the people.
