Veracity Savant

Some rap stories get told in the booth. Others happen on the road. For Jeezy, one unforgettable Uber ride turned into a full-circle moment of giving back.

It all went down when the Atlanta legend was leaving ATL for his Baltimore tour stop at The Lyric on Aug. 1. Mother Nature wasn’t on his side—bad weather canceled flights to both Baltimore and D.C., forcing his team to scramble. At one point, they even tried to charter a jet, but with storms still in the area, that wasn’t a safe bet either.

The road to Baltimore got even rockier when the vehicle Jeezy’s team was driving hit an object on the highway, puncturing the gas tank and leaking fuel. They pulled into a small gas station in South Carolina to regroup, but options were running out fast. That’s when they called an Uber just to get to the airport rental car desk.

Enter Tanner, the Uber driver who became the unsung hero of the night. Within minutes of loading bags, Jeezy turned to him with a request that would test anyone’s commitment.

“Eight minutes into the ride, I turned to him and said, ‘Hey, we need to go to Baltimore.’ I asked how much he’d charge to take us there, and after a moment of consideration, he replied, ‘Let me think about it.’ I assured him that whatever it was, he’d have it. Like a real one, he didn’t hesitate and just kept driving,” Jeezy said in a post to social media after the debacle

Ten hours later, Tanner pulled up to Baltimore—just ten minutes before showtime. Jeezy then brought him on stage, handed him a Snowman tee, and declared him the real MVP in front of the roaring crowd.

Fast forward a couple weeks, and Jeezy flipped that wild ride into a bigger move. He took to social media to  announce he was officially partnering with Uber to cover rides for 101 people who need them most.

“I’m happy to announce my collaboration with @uber to help provide rides for 101 people in need—people like single mothers, people who have a hard time getting to work… We see you. We’ve got you. Uber is covering the rides; my @streetdreamzfoundation team will be hitting the streets, surprising these people in need,” Jeezy captioned the announcement video.

From “TM:101” to 101 free rides, the Snowman found a way to turn a road trip nightmare into community motivation. Twenty years after dropping the soundtrack to our hustle, Jeezy is still delivering—only this time, the ride is on him.
